Alghero is most likely Sardinia’s most touristy town and its own most attractive.
algheroWith its colourful bell towers and  cobbled streets , its medieval seaside and walls bastions . Yet Alghero started as a Catalan colony and you may still see  the Catalan-inscribed street signs of “Little Barcelona”, and eat paella.

Among Alghero’s landmarks may be the Cattedrale di Santa Maria in the Piazza Duomo - a combination  of Renaissance, Baroque and Gothic styles with four oversized Doric columns that cover its façade nearly. The portal and campanile are from the initial 1552 construction and modelled following the cathedral in Barcelona.
Nearby in the Museo Diocesano d’Arte Sacra  you will see  Spanish jewels, a marble statue of the Madonna della Misericordia, and an accumulation of stamped lithographs of Sardinian Romanesque churches.

car rental alghero sardiniaMost cost effective Car Hire at Alghero Airport
With the extra flights into Alghero come early July - tourists are increasingly being advised to ensure they will have their car hire booked beforehand. One website was discussing a shortage of cars for hire in summer 2015 due to all of the new routes exposed by Ryanair.

In August 2017 we did an instant check of Alghero car hire prices booked online for weekly. From August 8th to August 15th 2017 the comparisons were done on, may 23rd 2017 for seven days car rental.

Auto Europe were supplying a 2 door Fiat Panda with Air conditioning for £180.12 for seven days.

Holiday Autos quoted me £193 Pounds for an Opel Corsa for exactly the same 7 days.

£205.01 Pounds at Hertz Car Hire would get me a Fiat Panda 2 door for the full week. (Paid completely beforehand)

Hertz have a motor car rental desk at Alghero Airport - among the many at the airport.
Hertz car hire prices might not always be the least expensive - however they do appear to have an excellent collection of cars.
Be prepared to be offered Italian made cars such as for example Fiat - be sure you get air-con otherwise you'll bake in the 34 degree summer temperatures.

Europcar had a Fiat Panda 4 door for the price tag on €245.30 Euro (about £279 GBP)  almost 100 pounds a lot more than the least expensive quote I obtained.

The costs above were the cheapest priced cars available from each rent a car company at the Alghero Airport on your day I was quoted. Prices changes by the full day and availability too. Book early in order to avoid obtaining a motor car you don’t want or a more costly price.

For those who desire to spend a little more or require a bigger car for the household - the next cars were also available.

Holiday Autos had a VW Caravelle 9 seater minibus for £567 Pounds
£411 pounds would allow you to get a mini cooper convertible from Auto Europe.

Taxis from Alghero Airport terminal
You can find buses from Alghero Airport to Alghero town - but a less strenuous solution to travel would be to book your personal private airport transfer. Taxis could be pre booked beforehand at Holiday taxis - so no queuing or waiting online.

Airport Taxis provides a return transfer for  around 3 visitors to Alghero for about £70  - That computes at about £23 each for the return journey.

Sure - the bus may be a whole lot cheaper - however the taxi will drop one to the door of one's hotel and pick you up there at the proper time. You don't need to check bus timetables and purchase tickets and discover the bus stop . (Investing in a bus ticket in Alghero isn't as easy as you imagine - you can’t can get on a bus with out a ticket!).

The taxi driver will meet you at arrivals together with your name on a board - and that means you won’t miss them.

Shopping in the Old Town
Alghero is filled with designer clothes shops - both for women and men. Every little street appears to have a minimum of one classy Italian clothes shop onto it. Don’t think all of them are called Saldi - that's Italian for “Sale” - and them all appeared to have a “Sale” on.

Despite having the costs cut supposedly by 50% - many were above my budget. The majority of the social people strolling on the streets were well dressed - not just a football shirt around the corner. The majority of the visitors in Alghero appeared to be Italian - with a scattering of Irish, English and Scandinavians or Germans. Not just a drunken lout or any sign of bad behaviour at all.

For a relaxed , peaceful holiday - Alghero is ideal. If you would like all full day fried breakfasts , happy hours and discos till 4am - then stay away.
